Users of Windows 7 Professional or higher will from and with the launch of Windows 7 on the 22 October could download the Windows XP mode, a pre-configured virtual machine based on Windows XP via the Microsoft Download Center.

Windows XP mode will largely make it possible to run the software that currently work in Windows XP, but it is not compatible with Windows 7, in a virtual environment in Microsoft's upcoming operating system.
The applications are installed in Windows XP Mode window, but can be started from, for example, start menu in Windows 7 and behave largely as if they are completely ordinary Windows 7 applications. Among other things, is it possible to run Internet Explorer 6 in Windows XP mode.
Microsoft's Brandon LeBlanc announced late last week that Windows XP Mode is now ready for release. It is unclear whether it will be made available earlier to those who have already adopted Windows 7 and is now using a release candidate of Windows XP mode.
