Scientists found the log files that show how much the spammers make on the spam.
There is big money in spam, and the people behind continues to make much more money. A single mailing of spam promoting drugs go into thousands of dollars every day.
These are actual figures from the Russian security researcher Dmitry Samosseiko at Sophos, which has investigated the rise in organized spam network.
Samosseiko has written a report (PDF) on the revenue streams and business models among the Russian partner network, so-called "partnerka", which is behind some of the largest spam operations on the Internet.
Pharmaceuticals are one of the most successful products, seen with the criminal eyes. One of the oldest and largest Russian spam networks within the genre is called GlavMed.
The network requires an invitation from an existing member of the entry, but otherwise is completely open and can be used by anyone. The main product is their spam for well-known "canadian pharmacy", which sells many reviews as illegal drugs.
Ironically GlavMed argue that they are strongly opposed to spam, says Samosseiko in the report. The researchers believe to know that the business has close ties to SpamIT.com, a closed network of spammers that have been proven difficult to infiltrate.
Members of SpamIT are probably behind the Storm worm, Conficker and several other botnets, it is pointed out in the report.
Samosseiko revealed a completely open PHP-based backend to GlavMed, complete with software for e-commerce, either directly or GlavMed with copies of their databases.
There he found the sales figures that give a unique insight into the trading patterns to those that can be lured to buy products through spam.
According to the researchers leading a single spam campaign through GlavMed to over 20 daily sales. Spammers have a commission of 40 percent. On average traded every customer for approximately 200 dollars.
It gives a turnover of at least $ 4000 a day, per spam campaign. Of these are the spammers again with a profit of at least $ 1600, or over 9000 dollars, according to the report.
If Multiplying this up with several daily promotions and many other networks, it is easy to see why there is never an end to spam.
