Rootkit

Blue screen is never fun, and especially not when you get it right after an update from Microsoft itself, as was the case for many after the last update to XP. Microsoft was quick to blame for this, and had to take action after very many inquiries from desperate customers.

Comprehensive analysis of the memory dump files from the computers that were affected has led to one common denominator, namely that the machines that were struck were infected with malicious code even before the update. This code is a so-called "rootkit" by name Alureon.A, who had made changes to the core of Windows XP, which in turn led to blue screen-trouble on the infected machines.

Not hazardous to update

Since the patch called MS10-015 still is not the cause of blue screen, it is recommended by Microsoft that those who until now have hesitated to implement the update do it anyway. They are important to keep both operating system and antivirus updates.
Have you been infected by this rootkit it can be removed with Sophos Anti-Rootkit.
