False Firefox page spread adware

Victim of own success

A false Firefox page is now being used to spread adware on the Internet.

There are security firm eSoft who have warned about this in their blog.

Because of all the publicity surrounding the new version of Firefox 3.6 has malevolent companies and users seen her chance to spread their malware and adware around the net. This includes - as in this case - to create a fake web page to allow users to download software.

The fake page looks completely legitimate out in terms of design and layout of the download. But quite properly designed since the rest are not. It lists version 3.5 as the latest version, and typos that "Anti-Pishing" also shows that it is not fully implemented.

You can still get the impression that you download Firefox. But users do not get what they expect.

Instead, they get an installer that is modified by the arrest the people behind to install adware in addition to the browser.

It installs as a toolbar from Pinball Corp.. In addition to the toolbar, the user is bombarded with popup and a weather application running in the background.

Naturally recommend eSoft users to only download software from the official site of the publisher if possible.
