A number of IT giants are behind the technology.
Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) announced yesterday that it has completed a specification of States, wireless networks, which in addition to supporting today's 802.11-based networks, also using 60 GHz band to provide much higher speeds than any shorter distances than that found in today's wireless LANs.
Over distances of more than 10 meters to equipment based on WiGig version 1.0 to transfer data at speeds up to 7 gigabits per second. The rate will however depend on the implementation used, but the 1 Gbit / s is considered a minimum for the unit.
The technology is based on the MAC layer (Media Access Control) to the IEEE 802.11 standard and will thus be backward compatible with such equipment.
The high speeds are primarily meant the direct transfer of bandwidth-intensive content, especially HD video, for example, between computers, mobile phones, televisions and other types of monitors, media players, digital cameras and more.
It also makes WiGig more interesting than many of the other wireless technologies with sufficient capacity to transmit HD video, is that the alliance has been joined by some of the key equipment and component vendors in the IT industry.
This includes, among others, Intel, AMD, Nvidia, Microsoft, Samsung, LG Electronics, Broadcom, NEC, Atheros Communications, Toshiba, Dell, Panasonic, Nokia, Marvell and Texas Instruments.
The specifications will be first released in the first quarter of 2010.
