Microsoft to soon make a public test version of IIS Express, a new web server that will combine the best of the two Web server products company offers today, IIS Web Server and ASP.NET Development Server.
In a blog post writes, Scott Guthrie, head of Microsoft's. NET Developer Platform, that the present two solutions do not resolve the needs of all developers.
ASP.NET Development Server that comes with Visual Studio is a web server with very limited functionality, while IIS included with Windows, however, a complete Web server. The problem with this is that it requires administrator access for setup and debugging projects, and that the version that comes with the operating system varies between different Windows versions.
IIS Express to be both lightweight and easy to install. It should be about an installation in less than 10 megabytes. It should not require access to an administrator account to run or debug applications from Visual Studio, and it should offer what Guthrie calls the full Web server, including support for SSL, URL Rewrite, Media Support and all other IIS 7.x modules.
The upcoming Web server to be installed side by side with the rest of Microsoft's Web servers without causing conflicts. Also supports the older Windows versions, including Windows XP.
Guthrie suggests in a comment to the blog post that IIS Express is just one of several related news the company will make the near future. Probably will not beta version will be available until all announcements have been made public.
