Google gives up IE6

Will no longer support old browsers.

Google will no longer support Microsoft's browser Internet Explorer 6 (IE6). Users of obsolete browsers must settle on upgrading, or miss the functionality of multiple services.

- Many other companies have already stopped supporting old browsers like IE6, and browsers that are no longer supported by their own producers. We are now beginning to phase out our IE6 support, the company said in a blog post Friday.
IE6 Outdated

With effect from 1 March can no longer users of Google Docs and Google Sites assume that key functions work with IE6 and other outdated browsers, according to the message.

Instead, Google recommends users to use IE7, Firefox 3, Chrome 4, Safari 3 or newer products.

The announcement comes just a scant two weeks after it was reported that Chinese hackers exploited a vulnerability in the almost nine year old browser IE6 in a sophisticated attack against Google and other companies.

Security is not the reason Google may provide for the transition. Instead, they point out that outdated browsers have problems with the interactive features of newer web applications.

- We want to ensure that as many as possible can use what we develop, the company writes in the post is titled "Modern applications requires modern browsers.

Already last year, Google began to encourage Youtube users to get rid of IE6. Later this giant warned that they would phase out IE6 support in their social network service Orkut.

Microsoft also encourages users to switch to newer browsers, but has also committed to supporting Internet Explorer 6 with updates throughout its life cycle. IE6 shipped with Windows XP, and is scheduled to be supported until 8 April 2014.
