Windows 7 has given Microsoft a powerful economic boost, according to the company's financial statements for the quarter up to 31 December 2010, the year-second.
Compared with same quarter in the previous fiscal year, Microsoft's revenue increased by 14 percent to 19.0 billion dollars. Operating income increased 43 percent to 8.51 billion, while net profit increased by 60 percent to 6.66 billion dollars.
The business unit for Windows and Windows Live increased its turnover by 70 percent, from 4.06 billion to 6.90 billion. Operating income was doubled to 5.39 billion dollars. The unit's share of Microsoft's total revenue increased from 24 percent to 36 percent, while the percentage of total operating income increased from 46 percent to 63 percent. Revenue from the Windows 7-packs sold in the previous quarter, before the launch in October, is recorded in the December quarter. It corresponds to 1.71 billion dollars.
A year ago it was "Business Division", the business unit for the particular office suite Office, who contributed more than half of Microsoft's operating profit. This unit experienced a failure in sales of 3 percent, to 4.75 billion dollars, with an unchanged operating profit of 3.01 billion dollars.
Microsoft's third dairy cattle, server solutions and development tools, ( "Server and Tools") increased sales by 2 percent to 3.84 billion and operating income by 8 percent to 1.49 billion dollars.
The unit which stands for entertainment services as well as the Xbox game machine and other apparatus, "Entertainment and Devices", experienced reduced turnover by 11 percent to 2.90 billion, while operating profit was nearly tripled to 375 million.
The business unit for network services (except for Windows Live) are still the only one at Microsoft who runs a deficit. Turnover fell by 5 percent to 581 million U.S. dollars, and the operating deficit grew by 46 percent to 466 million U.S. dollars.
