Adobe introduces auto-update

Will ensure that fewer are using insecure versions of Reader and Acrobat.

Adobe's PDF software, Acrobat and Reader, has been an unfortunate position near the top of the list of software with many security holes in the last year. At the same time these products are popular targets for attackers because is widely used and available to multiple platforms.

This makes it important that users are at least using the latest version, so that in any case only the latest vulnerabilities that are available to attackers.

But Adobe has not had any kind of automatic updating of these products, and it is far from all users who check periodically whether there have been updates - even though this is easy from the menus  including in Adobe Reader.

That's why Adobe keeps on with the gradual deployment of an automated update system, which initially will run in the background and keep the software updated without involving the user.

To Threat Post says the security manager at Adobe, Brad Arkin, that the new update feature was rolled out in October. It will first be used to Adobe's beta testers in connection with the January updates, hopefully before it is put into full use in connection with the April update of Adobe Reader and Acrobat.

Arkin says further of it will be possible for users or administrators to control the update process if desired. They will be able to download updates and install them manually, or just get a notification that updates are available. It should also be possible to switch the entire system.
