Intel shows this week, the world's first PC processor with six cores, the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. It is specifically designed for gaming enthusiasts, but the increased performance will necessarily also be used in conjunction with other applications.
The processor is named Core i7-980X processor Extreme Edition. Previously, it had the code name "Gulf Town". It is based on 32 nanometer process technology, and supports running 12 simultaneous threads.
According to, including PCMag.com, the new processor a lot in common with the previous top model. Both are initially clocked at 3.33 GHz, both have a maximum power demand of 130 watts and both supports three channels of DDR3-1066 memory. But with the new processor, you get two extra cores and 4 megabytes of extra cache memory without extra charge, which admittedly is $ 999.
Core i7-980 will use the same LGA-1366 socket previously i7 processors and supported by the motherboard chipset Intel X58 Express.
